# Basics

Khotan is an agent-native workspace for apps, pipelines, databases, files, and context.

Harnesses like Claude Code and Codex are becoming exceptional at building products. A large share of what they produce still goes unused or poorly maintained.

Teams that build a software factory account for the velocity of code and features. What usually goes unnoticed is the infrastructure underneath. Sandboxes, databases, compute, and inference are each strong on their own. Stitched together, they become tools you can actually run and share.

Most teams still provision those pieces on separate platforms and spend the rest of the time keeping them connected, provisioning from new vendors, and maintaining tools with SOTA expectations. As long-running agents get better at the work, **writing the tool stops being the hard part. Packaging it, running it, and handing it to someone else is.**

Khotan packages and provisions that infrastructure on one platform, so using a tool — and sharing it — is as easy as making it.

The public CLI, `@khotan/cli`, is a thin adapter over the Khotan `/api/v1` HTTP API. It adds nothing the API cannot do — it makes the same operations ergonomic for humans and agents.
